Establishing a comprehensive weed management program is essential for maintaining farm productivity and reducing weed populations and proliferation.
To help maximize soybean yield potential, weed control programs should include an herbicide burndown or tillage and residual herbicides applied pre- and postemergence.
XtendFlex® soybeans have tolerance to dicamba, glyphosate, and glufosinate herbicides which helps provide farmers more flexibility for controlling tough-to-control broadleaf weeds, including those with PPO-herbicide resistance and glyphosate resistance.
Regardless of crop, scouting and documentation of weed growth throughout the duration of a growing season, including harvest, is an important part of weed management because it helps provide a foundation for a successful herbicide program for the following year. Knowing which weeds are present and any resistance they have is important for herbicide selection. With trait tolerance to dicamba, glyphosate, and glufosinate, the planting of XtendFlex® soybeans provides for the use of Liberty® Herbicide or other glufosinate herbicides to help with the management of tough-to-control broadleaf weeds including those with glyphosate resistance, such as Palmer amaranth or other resistant weeds that glufosinate controls.
The Roundup Ready® Xtend Crop System recommends the use of the following herbicides for weed management in XtendFlex® soybeans, a soil-applied residual herbicide, such as Warrant® Herbicide or Warrant® Ultra Herbicide, and XtendiMax® herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology, a restricted use pesticide.A
Benefits of XtendiMax® herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology
- A dicamba formulation that can be applied before, at, and after the planting of XtendFlex® soybeans
- Provides up to 14 days of soil activity on certain small-seeded broadleaf weeds.
- Results may vary, depending on rainfall and soil type.
- Always use dicamba with traditional residual herbicides in pre-emergence and postemergence applications that have different, effective sites of action, along with other Diversified Weed Management Practices including the use of glyphosate.
- When applied over-the-top it helps manage tough-to-control broadleaf weeds, including:
- glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth
- kochia
- waterhemp
- marestail (horseweed)
- common lambsquarters
- velvetleaf
Fall and Spring Weed Control
Starting with a clean field at planting is an essential step for proper weed management and can begin with a fall or early-winter herbicide application to control early emerging winter annuals. In the spring, a preplant burndown herbicide treatment applied before weeds reach 4 inches in height or tillage can help remove early weed infestations that can inhibit proper seed placement and compete for nutrients and water. When using XtendFlex® soybeans in a minimum tillage system, an effective tank-mix burndown program includes 22 fl oz/acre (0.5 lb acid equivalent/acre) of XtendiMax® herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology, a restricted use pesticide, an approved Volatility Reduction Adjuvant (VRA), an approved Drift Reduction Adjuvant (DRA), 30 fl oz/acre of Roundup PowerMAX® 3 Herbicide, and a Group 14 or 15 residual herbicide. In a conventional tillage system, especially under dry conditions, apply a tank mix of XtendiMax® herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology, a VRA, a DRA, and a Group 14 or 15 residual herbicide at planting.
Growing Season Weed Control
During the growing season, weed growth should be addressed before weeds reach 4 inches in height. An early postemergence application of 22 fl oz/acre of XtendiMax® herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology, a restricted use pesticide, with an approved Volatility Reduction Adjuvant (VRA), an approved Drift Reduction Adjuvant (DRA), plus 30 fl oz/acre of Roundup PowerMAX® 3 Herbicide and 3 pts/acre of Warrant® Herbicide or 50 fl oz/acre of Warrant® Ultra Herbicide is recommended to help control the continuous germination of problematic weed species like Palmer amaranth, marestail, and waterhemp.
If glyphosate resistant weeds are present, a second postemergence application of 32 fl oz/acre of Liberty® Herbicide, a glufosinate herbicide, plus ammonium sulfate (AMS) is recommended. In contrast to a glyphosate herbicide, which moves (TRANSLOCATES) within the plant, glufosinate containing herbicides have limited translocation in plants; therefore, adequate herbicide coverage of above-ground plant tissue is necessary to effectively control weeds.

AXtendiMax® herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology is part of the Roundup Ready® Xtend Crop System, is a restricted use pesticide and must be used with VaporGrip® Xtra Agent (or an equivalent reduction adjuvant).
